Jamila Afelom, a mother from the northern Moroccan city of Tétouan, identified her daughter, Fatin Ben Homar Azizi, by a necklace after finding her body at a hospital. Fatin had attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Afelom described Fatin as bold, determined, and somewhat boyish, emphasizing her passion for soccer. Fatin, a 26-year-old soccer enthusiast, had dreams of escaping economic hardship in Morocco by seeking a better life in Europe. Despite warnings about the dangers of irregular migration routes, many young Moroccans, including Fatin, aspired to find opportunities in Europe. Tragically, Fatin lost her life in the pursuit of a brighter future. The Moroccan human rights organization AMDH reported numerous deaths of individuals attempting to reach Ceuta, with many bodies remaining unidentified.
Afelom, a single mother, shared the challenges her family faced in a region with limited opportunities and support. Despite her efforts to dissuade Fatin from attempting the perilous journey, Fatin’s determination to seek a better life prevailed. The family’s search for Fatin ended tragically when they discovered her body in a hospital in Fnideq. Fatin was laid to rest at the same cemetery where she and her mother worked. The story of Fatin’s untimely passing sheds light on the harsh realities faced by many young Moroccans seeking opportunities abroad.
In the aftermath of Fatin’s death, her family continues to grapple with the loss while worrying about the fate of Fatin’s siblings who survived the journey to Ceuta. The heart-wrenching ordeal underscores the challenges and risks faced by migrants, especially minors, seeking refuge and a better future. Afelom’s poignant account serves as a stark reminder of the human toll of migration and the struggles endured by those striving for a better life beyond their homeland.
