“Tragic Death Halts North West 200 Qualifying”

Date:

A tragic incident occurred during the qualifying session for the North West 200 in Northern Ireland, leading to the death of a rider. The racing activities were immediately halted after the crash, and it was later confirmed by event organizers that the rider had passed away.

The fatal accident took place at Station corner on the NW200 course during the Superbike qualifying session. Despite the prompt arrival of emergency services, the rider could not be saved due to the severity of the injuries sustained.

While the family of the deceased rider has allowed the event to continue, they have requested not to disclose the rider’s identity at this time. The Coleraine and District Motor Club, responsible for organizing the races, expressed their deepest condolences to the family and team of the rider.

Road Racing Ireland also offered its sympathies to the rider’s family, friends, team, and all those impacted by the unfortunate incident. The North West 200, held on a 8.97-mile closed public road circuit known as the ‘Triangle’ between Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine, is a significant outdoor sporting event in Northern Ireland, drawing approximately 100,000 spectators.

This fatality marks the first death at the event since the passing of Malachi Mitchell-Thomas during a Supertwins race in 2016. In response to the tragedy, event organizers have adjusted the schedule for the evening, with roads now reopened and a revised program of four qualifying sessions replacing the originally planned races from 5.45pm onwards.
