Tourists at the Vatican this week have criticized US President Donald Trump for his recent remarks about Pope Leo. Trump took to social media to label the Pope as “weak” and influenced by the “radical left” after Pope Leo condemned Trump’s stance on Iran. Despite calls for an apology, Trump stood firm in his position.
While Pope Leo is currently on a trip to Africa, visitors to the Vatican have not held back in expressing their views on the situation. One tourist from Switzerland, Joerg Soler, emphasized the importance of the Pope advocating for peace and global well-being. French tourist Mariella Acciaioli echoed similar sentiments, urging leaders to address the escalating tensions.
American tourist Paul Sarauskas was astonished by Trump’s comments, describing them as “absurd” and inappropriate interference in religious matters. He highlighted the stark contrast between the Pope’s message of peace and unity and the current administration’s divisive rhetoric.
In response to Trump’s criticisms, Pope Leo reaffirmed the Vatican’s commitment to peace and reconciliation based on Gospel teachings. He emphasized the church’s role in promoting harmony and condemned attempts to undermine its mission.
Italian journalist Massimo Franco remarked that Trump’s expectations of Pope Leo to align with US interests were misguided, noting the Pope’s broader responsibility to a global community. Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a prominent Italian Jesuit theologian, criticized Trump’s hostility toward moral authority, emphasizing the enduring strength of the church’s ethical principles.
The ongoing clash between Trump and Pope Leo underscores the complex dynamics between political power and moral influence, with the Vatican standing firm in its mission to uphold values of peace and justice.
