“Travelling with Cards? Avoid Airport Security Delays”

Date:

Airport security can be a frustrating ordeal for travelers, especially when items in your luggage trigger additional checks. While preparing to pass through the scanners, it’s essential to ensure that your belongings do not cause any delays. One seemingly harmless item that often raises suspicion among airport staff is a deck of cards or trading cards.

Whether you are packing playing cards for entertainment during your trip or collectible items like Pokémon cards, these objects can lead to security issues due to their shape and density. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises travelers to store valuable card sets in their carry-on bags to avoid potential problems.

TSA spokesperson Ian Cava highlighted that the arrangement of cards, such as decks or binders, can create challenges during X-ray screening, potentially giving the impression of hidden items. To streamline the security process and prevent hold-ups, Ian suggested placing the cards in a separate tray next to your bag, similar to how you handle your mobile phone.

In cases where the cards are not clearly visible on the scanner, travelers should be prepared for manual inspections by security personnel. It is recommended that individuals carrying extensive card collections allocate extra time for security screening to prevent any delays.

Aside from cards, various personal items are prohibited in hand luggage for safety reasons, ranging from sharp objects to seemingly harmless items like corkscrews. Understanding and complying with these regulations can help travelers navigate airport security smoothly.
