Police authorities in Russia have initiated an inquiry following an alarming incident where a circus tiger broke free during a performance and jumped into the audience. The unsettling video footage from the occurrence in Rostov-on-Don on Sunday captures the captive circus animal running loose after an unexpected malfunction allowed it to escape.
The footage begins with three tigers standing on stools while the ringmaster and assistant move around the stage, separated from the spectators by a circular net. However, due to a sudden mechanical failure, the net is swiftly lowered, giving the tiger an opening to make a quick escape.
The tiger swiftly leaps onto the metal circle and then plunges into the spectator area below, eliciting gasps of shock from the audience. Witnesses observed audience members standing up to catch a glimpse of the liberated animal, with some rushing towards the aisles.
Subsequent footage depicts mostly empty seats as the tiger roams up and down the rows, while a few remaining audience members appear unfazed, either filming the incident on their phones or casually watching as the animal passes by.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as the tiger broke free, with one individual recounting, “The tigers were frightened… and one leaped into the audience. Children were screaming, and adults were running in panic.” Another witness mentioned that the tiger ran outside onto the street after the tent was evacuated by ushers, moving through empty rows of seats.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, as the tiger was eventually recaptured a short distance from the tent. The circus director, Nikolai Dovgaluk, assured that the tiger was safely returned without incident, emphasizing that the trained tigers are not a threat as they are managed like domesticated animals. He attributed the net malfunction to an employee error and a coincidence, stating that it was challenging to assign direct blame to anyone.
The federal Investigative Committee of Russia announced a probe into potential safety breaches on Monday, even though the use of captive animals in circuses is now restricted in many Western countries due to stricter welfare regulations. Nonetheless, Russian circuses, including renowned troupes like the Bolshoi and the Moscow State Circus, frequently showcase captive animals such as bears, elephants, and Siberian tigers in their performances.
