“Thunderhead Monument Unveiling Shines Light on LGBTQ+ Discrimination”

Date:

The Thunderhead monument, featuring a cylindrical shell pierced by a thundercloud revealing thousands of sparkling mirrors, sheds light on the historical discrimination faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in Canada. Wayne Davis, a victim of purging due to his sexuality, expressed appreciation for the monument’s visibility during its unveiling in Ottawa. Recalling his expulsion from the RCMP in 1985 for being gay, Davis highlighted the emotional toll and impact on his career.

Davis, alongside around 9,000 other 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians, faced persecution and dismissal from the military, RCMP, and civil service between the Cold War era and the 1990s. This purge was driven by the unfounded fear that their sexuality could compromise national security. Many victims, including Sgt. Robert David Van Norman, suffered in silence and shame, with their families unaware of the true reasons behind their dismissals.

Van Norman, a highly respected RCMP officer forced to resign in 1964 after being spotted in a gay bar, endured a life of hardship and rejection, eventually succumbing to AIDS in 1988. His story, like many others, remained untold for years due to the stigma attached to the LGBT Purge. Elenore Sturko, Van Norman’s great niece and an ex-RCMP officer, spoke of the family’s struggle and the lasting impact on their lives.

In 2017, Davis and Sturko witnessed the formal apology by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the LGBT Purge, marking a significant moment for those affected. Today, they continue to advocate for justice and remembrance through their involvement with the LGBT Purge Fund, managing settlement funds for victims. The unveiling of the Thunderhead monument, funded in part by these settlements, symbolizes a step towards recognition and healing for those who endured this dark chapter in Canadian history.
