Despite the stormwater system managing the initial storm, subsequent storms saturated the ground, overwhelming the system’s capacity. This resulted in widespread overland flooding and sewer backups into residences, with sewage entering some homes, as Mayor Siscoe explained.
Dave White, the owner of White Orchard Farms near St. David’s, preemptively safeguarded his garlic crops during the recent storms. Having experienced losses due to heavy rains in the past, White took proactive measures to prevent crop damage this time by ensuring proper drainage in his fields.
The flooding incidents have led to a surge in calls to White’s restoration company from homeowners dealing with flooded properties. The ongoing challenges highlight the urgent need for upgrading drainage and sewage infrastructure in the region.
St. Catharines faces infrastructure challenges due to outdated systems ill-equipped to handle extreme weather events. The city is exploring various strategies, including redesigning parks to absorb excess rainwater and requiring new developments to incorporate stormwater retention measures.
Mayor Siscoe emphasized the need for additional funding from provincial and federal sources to address the high costs of infrastructure upgrades. The city has ramped up infrastructure spending in response to previous flooding events but recognizes the need for accelerated action to protect residents’ quality of life.
