Markham is gearing up for an exciting weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, including the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto dating back to 1986, this will mark the first time the race takes place outside the city on a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometer, 12-turn course will wind through various locations, including the Unionville GO station grounds, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To help attendees get to the track, utilizing GO Transit, York Region Transit, or driving via Highway 407 is recommended, with parking options to the west of the event grounds.
Metrolinx has boosted service on the Stouffville Line for race weekend, offering additional trips from Union Station to Unionville GO and vice versa. Similarly, York Region Transit will provide more frequent services, and shuttle services will be available from designated parking lots to the event venue.
Residents in Markham have been coping with construction impacts due to the track preparation. Various roads, including parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard, will be closed until Monday morning, with some closures extending until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event on Sunday will feature the IndyCar race, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points standings and considered a top contender. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also showcase their skills in support series races.
Drivers are adjusting to the new Markham track layout, which offers a smoother surface compared to Toronto’s bumpy roads. The layout includes elevation changes and tight sections, providing a unique challenge for the racers. Tickets for the weekend races are available for purchase on the event website, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday.
