“Snapchat Predator Jailed: Teen Manipulated Victim, Expressed Sinister Desires”

Date:

A teenager’s online acquaintance on Snapchat, initially perceived as “kind and attentive,” was revealed to be a dangerous predator, as disclosed during a court case that led to his imprisonment.

Benjamin Mitchell, aged 19, manipulated his victim through Snapchat, establishing a relationship with her and coercing her into sending explicit videos of herself. Shocking revelations emerged about his disturbing intentions, including expressing desires to use cable ties on children.

According to testimonies presented in Liverpool Crown Court, Mitchell, a resident of Newton-le-Willows, engaged in an illicit online relationship with a 15-year-old girl he befriended on Snapchat in August of the previous year. Over the following four months, Mitchell sent explicit images of himself and pressured the girl into sharing similar content. The victim felt distressed and overwhelmed by the frequent demands.

The abusive behavior continued until the girl confided in her friends and mother about the situation in December. The mother, shocked by the revelation, condemned Mitchell’s actions as “disgusting and abhorrent,” emphasizing the nightmare of a child falling prey to an online predator.

In a statement, the victim highlighted Mitchell’s exploitation of her vulnerabilities and mental health struggles, condemning his selfish actions and lack of regard for the harm caused. Mitchell’s actions were further exposed when police seized his phone, discovering indecent images of young girls, leading to his confession of attraction to children and his inability to control his urges.

During the court proceedings, Mitchell admitted to several charges, including inappropriate communication with a minor, possession of indecent images, and breaching a previous suspended sentence. The judge sentenced him to four years in prison, with an additional three-year extended license period.

Court records revealed Mitchell’s troubling disclosures to his offender manager, indicating an obsessive interest in children and a fascination with weapons. The judge emphasized the emotional manipulation and grooming tactics employed by Mitchell, causing significant harm to the victim’s mental well-being.

Despite Mitchell’s diagnoses of autism and ADHD, the judge held him accountable for his actions, stating that he was fully aware of the victim’s age and the wrongful nature of his behavior. Mitchell’s sentence includes serving a minimum of two-thirds of his prison term before parole eligibility, along with strict preventive measures and registration as a sex offender for a lifetime.
