“Yvette Cooper Slams Iran for Strait of Hormuz Closure”

Date:

Yvette Cooper has criticized Iran for its risky actions and accused the regime of trying to manipulate the global economy by blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

This condemnation followed intense discussions led by the Foreign Secretary with numerous countries, urging the immediate and unconditional reopening of the crucial shipping passage. Contingency plans involving potential sanctions against Iran were also deliberated upon by the UK and its allies if the Strait of Hormuz remains shut.

The Iranian government’s disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, purportedly in response to military actions by the US and Israeli forces, has triggered a surge in global oil prices and concerns over potential shortages. Previously, more than 150 tankers transited through the Strait daily, but recent disruptions have reduced this to only five vessels passing through in the last day.

During a virtual meeting involving representatives from over 40 nations, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the numerous vessel attacks in the Strait, affecting thousands of seafarers and ships. Cooper emphasized that Iran’s actions were impacting the economies of various countries, disrupting trading routes for multiple nations and essential supplies like natural gas, fertilizer, and jet fuel worldwide.

Plans for potential sanctions on Iran and diplomatic initiatives through the United Nations were discussed among allies following the meeting. The statement released post-meeting outlined the consideration of coordinated economic and political actions, including sanctions, to exert pressure on Iran if the Strait remains obstructed.

The response from Yvette Cooper came after US President Donald Trump’s televised address, where he hinted at the nearing conclusion of the conflict with Iran. Notably, Trump suggested that countries reliant on the Strait of Hormuz should consider purchasing American oil or taking control of the passage themselves.

Cooper stressed the importance of a different approach compared to the US, advocating for coordinated measures to address Iran’s disruptive actions targeting global shipping and economic stability. She emphasized the need for diplomatic, economic, and unified efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Additionally, the Foreign Secretary mentioned plans for military discussions among participating countries to strategize on demining operations and other defensive measures in the Strait post-conflict easing.

In a separate statement, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called on the Prime Minister to take decisive actions to reopen the oil and gas shipping route. He emphasized the necessity of international cooperation to resolve the crisis and alleviate the impact on energy supplies and costs for British citizens.
