A young Asian elephant at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., named Linh Mai, has been shunned by her mother, sparking sympathy from many who recall Punch, the monkey who famously turned to a plush toy after being rejected by his mother.
Linh Mai was born on February 2, marking the first elephant birth at the zoo in 25 years. Named through a public vote, “Linh Mai” means “spirit blossom” in Vietnamese. Despite plans for her to be raised by her multigenerational herd, her mother Nhi Linh and grandmother Trong Nhi displayed aggressive behavior towards her, necessitating her separation.
Fortunately, Linh Mai found support in her “auntie” Swarna, who took on the role of guiding and nurturing the calf. The zoo remains cautious but optimistic about the progress, emphasizing the importance of integrating Linh Mai into the herd.
Efforts are being made to facilitate safe interaction between Linh Mai and her mother and grandmother, ensuring the calf’s protection while allowing them to bond. Swarna’s role as a surrogate caregiver has been pivotal, showcasing her natural maternal instincts and fostering a special relationship with Linh Mai.
