Tension rose as Sir Keir Starmer arrived to address local Jewish leaders today. A group of around 200 individuals pushed forward but were restrained by numerous police officers. They lingered outside while the Prime Minister stayed at the community center for an unexpected hour-and-a-half.
Some attendees were pleasantly surprised and appreciative of Starmer’s visit to Golders Green and his extended stay. However, a significant portion of the crowd displayed anger, reminiscent of the previous day when they disrupted Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley. This time, their frustration was directed at Starmer.
One observer witnessed a man defending Starmer against protestors who were chanting insults. The man criticized the chants as unhelpful and emphasized the importance of mindful speech, considering the presence of cameras and the press. He acknowledged the challenges Starmer faced and urged for more careful and respectful behavior.
Amidst the heated exchange, police officers observed for 20 minutes until Starmer’s departure back to Downing St. The protests were orchestrated with chants resembling those heard at football matches as the Prime Minister’s convoy arrived at Pearl House in Golders Green.
While some demonstrators labeled Starmer as a traitor or coward, others discouraged extreme actions, even silencing chants that veered towards hostility. As Starmer left, additional police reinforcements were brought in to ensure his safe departure.
Despite some attendees urging Starmer to show his face, others defended his engagement with the community. Following the protest, some individuals remained to express gratitude towards the police for their handling of the situation.
