“Pope Leo Condemns US Expansion of Death Penalty”

Date:

The latest move by the US Department of Justice to expand the federal death penalty, including the possibility of using firing squads, has drawn criticism from Pope Leo. The Department’s decision to re-implement the lethal injection protocol from the previous administration, along with adding new execution methods, has sparked controversy.

In response to the announcement, Pope Leo emphasized the sanctity of human life, stating that every individual, from conception to natural death, deserves protection. He expressed solidarity with those advocating for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States and globally, urging a greater recognition of human dignity.

Furthermore, the Department of Justice revealed its intention to expedite death penalty cases by streamlining internal processes and lifting the moratorium on federal executions established during the Biden administration. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche has already approved seeking death sentences against a number of defendants.

Former President Donald Trump had previously signed an executive order aimed at increasing federal death sentences and ensuring states had an ample supply of lethal injection drugs. The ongoing developments have reignited debates surrounding the ethics and implications of capital punishment.
