Golf icon Phil Mickelson has conveyed a message to Rory McIlroy after his triumph at the Masters. McIlroy achieved a rare feat by successfully defending his title at Augusta National in a thrilling final round on Sunday.
Initially, there were concerns that McIlroy might lose his grip on the Masters crown after encountering challenges with a double-bogey on the fourth hole and a subsequent bogey on the sixth. However, McIlroy composed himself, rallying with four birdies in the following seven holes, and sealed his one-under-par performance with a crucial bogey putt.
Despite his impressive lead in the initial days, the 36-year-old McIlroy faced mounting pressure and ultimately secured victory by a narrow margin of one stroke. Although it was a tight finish, the competition provided an engaging spectacle, reminiscent of his playoff win against Justin Rose a year ago, which three-time Masters champion Mickelson thoroughly enjoyed witnessing.
McIlroy and Mickelson are known for their differing stances within the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf community, with Mickelson having joined LIV in 2022. Mickelson, at 55 years old, acknowledged McIlroy’s achievement of matching his six major wins and lauded the champion for his remarkable back-to-back Masters triumph.
Through a social media post, Mickelson congratulated McIlroy, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of achieving consecutive victories at the Masters. This gesture is not unfamiliar, as Mickelson previously praised McIlroy for completing his career Grand Slam at Augusta last year.
McIlroy received the top prize of £3.3 million and relished his successful title defense, expressing his satisfaction with the hard-fought win. In his victory speech, McIlroy thanked his family, particularly his wife Erica and daughter Poppy, for their unwavering support, highlighting their integral role in his success.
Recognizing the pivotal moment on the 18th tee, McIlroy revealed the silent understanding he shared with his caddie, Harry Diamond, as they both comprehended the task at hand. He expressed gratitude to his family, including his parents, for their invaluable support and credited them for shaping him into the person and player he has become.
