Hundreds of thousands of portable phone chargers are being urgently recalled following a series of alarming incidents, including a fatal one involving an elderly woman. Approximately 429,200 wireless power banks manufactured by Casely have been taken off the market due to concerns about potential overheating and fire risks. These devices first came under scrutiny in April of the previous year by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after numerous reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating, swelling, or catching fire during phone charging sessions. These incidents resulted in minor burns for at least six individuals and tragically led to the death of a 75-year-old woman in New Jersey who sustained severe burns when her wireless charger suddenly ignited and exploded while in use on her lap in August 2024.
In another harrowing occurrence in February of this year, a woman experienced a similar incident aboard an aircraft while using the same model of wireless charger, resulting in burns. These risky chargers are just one among several products that are currently subject to urgent recalls due to safety concerns. The CPSC recently announced a widespread recall on Thursday due to various severe risks, such as choking, battery ingestion, electric shock, fire hazards, and serious burn threats.
Additionally, Expandable Magic Pocket Staffs marketed online for aspiring magicians have been recalled as they have been found to unexpectedly expand without warning, causing over 160 injuries including eye damage, cuts, and temporary vision loss. Parents are also cautioned about multiple toy recalls, including children’s activity cubes and Montessori playsets, which have been withdrawn due to fears of small parts breaking off and posing a choking hazard to young children. Several toys containing button batteries, like finger lights and toy lasers, have been identified as potentially life-threatening if swallowed due to the risk of severe internal burns. Other household items, such as certain electric pressure washers sold through Amazon, have been recalled due to serious electrical faults that could lead to electric shock or electrocution.
Furthermore, Arch Studio tea kettles sold at Macy’s stores and online during a specific period have been recalled because the handles can detach when heated, increasing the risk of severe burn injuries. Fisher & Paykel has also issued a recall for freestanding professional gas ovens sold nationwide over a specified timeframe due to burn risks. Adult portable bed rails sold on Amazon are being recalled for entrapment and asphyxiation hazards, as well as for non-compliance with safety standards. Generac Power Systems’ portable generators are also being pulled from the market due to fire hazards, while Apex Gaming PCs are recalling computer power supplies because of shock risks. Consumers are advised to discontinue using any affected products immediately and refer to official recall notices for guidance.
