“Key Federal Byelections to Shape Canada’s Political Landscape”

Date:

Voters are set to cast their ballots in three federal byelections taking place in North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec on Monday.

With the Liberals holding 170 seats in the House of Commons and opposition parties collectively having 166 seats due to various vacancies, the Liberals need to secure two wins to maintain control of the legislative agenda once all seats are filled.

The most closely contested race is anticipated in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who resigned after being appointed to the Senate, had held the riding since 2018. The Liberals and Bloc Québécois are vying for the seat, with polls indicating a close competition. Daniel Gobeil represents the Liberals, while Caroline Dubé is the Bloc candidate.

Candidates in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.

In Beaches-East York, candidates are competing to succeed former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who won the riding by a significant margin in the 2025 federal election. Candidates in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.

In North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are vying to replace former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who won the riding in 2025 and vacated the seat to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Candidates in this riding include Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.

CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections with chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and Power & Politics host David Cochrane starting at 9:30 p.m. ET, available for streaming on CBC News platforms.

If the Liberals lose all three byelections, they will have future opportunities to secure the two wins needed for a majority government.

The prime minister has not yet called byelections in the Quebec ridings of Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, and Laurier-Sainte-Marie, as well as in the Ontario riding of Scarborough North. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to formally resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville on Monday, while Conservative MP Larry Brock will step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations in the coming month.
