“Jay Baruchel Defiantly Champions Canadian Film Industry”

Date:

Amid escalating tensions between Canada and the United States within the entertainment sector, Canadian actor Jay Baruchel expresses unwavering confidence in his country’s ability to compete with its American counterpart.

Speaking confidently on the red carpet before the world premiere of The Stunt Driver at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Baruchel emphasized, “We will be fine.” He highlighted Canada’s historical track record of surpassing expectations and navigating challenges successfully.

Joining a cohort of Canadian actors at TIFF, Baruchel, known for his roles in BlackBerry and She’s Out of My League, takes the lead in the upcoming film inspired by the real-life story of stuntman Ken Carter. Portraying Carter, also known as The Mad Canadian, Baruchel embodies the daring spirit of the stuntman’s attempt to leap over the St. Lawrence River in a rocket-powered car in the 1970s, driven partly by a desire to outshine his American counterpart, Evel Knievel.

The debut of the film amid the ongoing trade dispute between Canada and the U.S. adds a sense of urgency and vitality, according to Baruchel. The actor described the narrative as a defiant statement in response to condescension and dismissal.

Earlier this month, the trade war took on a cultural aspect when U.S. President Donald Trump singled out Canada while announcing a proposed federal incentive to retain U.S. film productions domestically. This move stirred concerns within the Canadian film industry.

Over a century, a strong bond has developed between the Canadian and American entertainment industries, remarked TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, citing the U.S.-produced film Being Heumann, filmed in Toronto, as the festival’s opening feature.
