“Inside Sweden’s ICEHOTEL: A Chilling, Silent Oasis”

Date:

In the heart of Jukkasjärvi, guests at the renowned ICEHOTEL find themselves not only braving the chilling -5C temperatures but also grappling with the eerie silence that envelops the snow-packed rooms. The absence of noise becomes a stark realization for visitors, prompting some to seek solace in the warmer confines of the heated changing areas.

Guides like Glen humorously point out that spending a night in these icy chambers can heighten one’s awareness of tinnitus due to the extreme quietness. Adding to the surreal atmosphere are artistic installations like the adult-sized ice baby that peeks into the rooms, creating an otherworldly experience for guests.

The ICEHOTEL, a yearly architectural marvel, sees a convergence of creative minds who transform massive ice blocks from the Torne River into fantastical structures akin to a blend of James Bond’s ice palace and a whimsical fairground attraction. Each year, artists craft unique suites, such as ‘There is no one here’ by Ayla Turan and Kemal Tufan, featuring peculiar ice figures that intrigue and unsettle guests.

Exploring the other art suites before they melt away in April reveals imaginative designs like ‘Arctic Archive’ filled with snow books by Kristina Möckel and Sebastian Scheller, or ‘Survival of the Fittest’ where guests share space with resilient tardigrades created by Carl and Malena Wellander. Notably, ‘Crystal Souls’ by Robin Lind and Charlie Hammarlund presents enigmatic ice figures locked behind blocks, evoking a sense of mystery and intrigue.

The ICEHOTEL, the pioneer and largest of its kind, began in 1989 as a refuge for Swedish soldiers in need of shelter amidst plummeting temperatures. Since then, it has welcomed countless guests seeking a unique and unforgettable experience. Constructed with technical precision using tons of ice and snow, the hotel stands as a testament to human ingenuity and creativity.

Apart from the ephemeral art suites, the ICEHOTEL features the year-round 365 Hotel, where guests can enjoy icy concoctions in the bar and marvel at the frozen interiors. Despite the hefty price tag attached to the experience, the enchanting ambiance and unexpected delights within the ice palace leave visitors enchanted and eager to explore more.

The ICEHOTEL experience varies in cost depending on the room type, season, and selected packages, starting from 4000 SEK per night for two guests with breakfast included. For more information on booking, visit the official ICEHOTEL website.
