The original Sooty puppets from the 1960s, once owned by Harry Corbett, are now being put up for auction by his son, Dave Corbett. The collection includes the iconic yellow glove puppet, two Sweeps, two Soos, and the mechanical device used to operate Soo, offering a unique glimpse behind the scenes of puppetry.
Harry Corbett, a legendary puppeteer, bought the first puppet in 1948 to entertain his sons, Dave and Matthew, who later became the inspiration for the popular children’s TV show. The puppets, integral to the Corbett family in their upbringing in Guisley, near Leeds, are now up for auction at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbyshire, scheduled for April 23.
Dave shared memories of how the puppets became a cherished part of their family life, with his mother even using soot to enhance their appearance. The sale also includes a mechanical device designed for Dave’s mother, Marjorie, who became the voice and operator of Soo in 1964.
Sooty made his TV debut in 1952 and quickly gained fame for his magical antics. The upcoming auction is expected to draw interest from museums, collectors, and TV enthusiasts due to the unique provenance of the puppets being part of the Corbett family collection.
Dave, who had a career in children’s entertainment and education, hopes to find a new home for the puppets where they will be appreciated. The auction will also feature other memorabilia related to Sooty, including Sweeps and a special This Is Your Life album presented to Harry Corbett.
The legacy of Sooty, Sweep, and Soo, as well as the Corbett family’s contribution to children’s entertainment, continues to be celebrated through these iconic puppets that hold a special place in entertainment history.
