A mother has shared the story of her seven-year-old daughter who developed a parasite infection and now avoids going into the sea following a family trip to Cornwall last summer. Little Willow Clarke experienced extreme discomfort for 12 days, including frequent vomiting, weight loss, and delirium. Doctors later diagnosed her with cryptosporidium, a parasite that can contaminate water sources like swimming areas.
The severity of Willow’s illness forced her to miss being a bridesmaid at her aunt’s wedding, a significant event she had eagerly anticipated. This incident comes amidst growing concerns about health risks associated with swimming in the sea due to sewage contamination.
Willow’s mother, Alice, recounted the distressing experience when they visited Carlyon Bay in Cornwall. Despite Willow not ingesting any seawater during their brief time in the sea, she fell ill shortly after and displayed symptoms of fatigue and high fever.
Following days of persistent vomiting, Alice sought medical help, leading to Willow’s diagnosis of cryptosporidium. The young girl’s condition gradually improved after the ordeal, but the mental impact remains significant. Willow now avoids the sea entirely due to fear stemming from her traumatic experience.
Alice firmly believes that Willow contracted the parasite from the sea, as there were no other plausible sources of infection during their trip. The financial strain of caring for her daughter during the illness added extra burden as a self-employed single parent.
Despite South West Water denying any responsibility for the contamination, investigations suggest that cryptosporidium can survive in seawater for extended periods, posing ongoing risks to swimmers. The family’s harrowing experience serves as a cautionary tale highlighting the potential dangers of waterborne parasites.
