A prominent British car dealership is nearing its closure, marking the end of an era for the once-thriving business specializing in pre-owned vehicles. London-headquartered Cargiant is scheduled to permanently shut down its operations in the capital on April 24 due to the inability to secure a suitable buyer. Formerly known for its extensive inventory of over 2,000 cars, Cargiant stood out as one of the busiest second-hand car retailers in the UK.
Situated on approximately 50 acres of land valued at around £100 million, the dealership is located adjacent to a planned HS2 interchange that will serve as a crucial hub connecting various transportation networks, including HS2, the Elizabeth Line, and other transit options.
Facing financial challenges in recent years, Cargiant’s management made efforts to sell both the business and the property but ultimately decided to cease operations after failing to ensure a sustainable future for the company. The closure comes on the heels of fluctuating financial performance, with a notable rebound in 2025, when the firm reported a pre-tax profit of £121.2 million following a substantial land revaluation, contrasting with a pre-tax loss of £22.4 million in 2023.
In a statement to Car Dealer, a spokesperson expressed deep regret over the closure, emphasizing the exhaustive deliberation process involving the team to explore all possible avenues for the business’s survival. Despite the dedicated efforts of the staff, it was concluded that the current business model was no longer financially viable.
Attributing the decision to a combination of factors such as dwindling used vehicle supply, driven primarily by the EV mandate, escalating operational expenses, and the growing complexity of the pre-owned car market, the company acknowledged its significant contribution to the UK automotive sector over the past five decades. Cargiant played a pivotal role in revolutionizing the concept of used car supermarkets, evolving into the largest independent car dealership in the UK and facilitating the sale of over a million vehicles while supporting numerous individuals in pursuing careers in the automotive industry.
