easyJet, the budget airline, is set to introduce a new seasonal summer route from London Gatwick to Newquay, providing convenient access to Cornwall’s picturesque beaches. Newquay, renowned for its golden sands and popularity among surfers, offers a variety of beach experiences including surfing lessons at Fistral Beach and family-friendly environments at spots like Porth Beach.
Starting from June 23, easyJet will operate this route until August 29, with fares beginning at £30.99 for a one-way ticket. Despite some environmental concerns due to carbon emissions, the flight option remains faster and more cost-effective compared to train travel, appealing to business travelers and short-break enthusiasts.
Kevin Doyle, easyJet UK Country Manager, expressed excitement over the new service, emphasizing improved connectivity for travelers from London and the South East. Cornwall Airport Newquay’s Commercial Director, Nigel Scott, also welcomed the addition, citing increased demand from the South East and the route’s affordability for visitors during peak summer periods.
The new flight service announcement follows the discontinuation of Skybus services funded by Cornwall Council, as reported by BBC News. Skybus attributed the decision to cease operations to rising fuel costs and decreased bookings, with affected passengers set to receive full refunds. CornwallLive revealed that Skybus flights had been operating at only 20% capacity, highlighting the financial support for the Public Service Obligation (PSO) route by the Department of Transport and Cornwall Council.
Newquay Airport, a bustling hub with various airline partners, including Aer Lingus and Ryanair, served over 407,609 passengers in 2024 alone. In addition to existing routes, easyJet’s new flight service adds to the airport’s connectivity options, catering to a diverse range of domestic and international destinations.
