Darline Graham Wins South Carolina GOP Senate Primary

Date:

Darline Graham, the sister of the deceased Senator Lindsey Graham, emerged victorious in the Republican primary runoff for U.S. Senate in South Carolina on Tuesday, as per U.S. media forecasts, marking a significant win for U.S. President Donald Trump. Appointed to temporarily hold the Senate seat after her brother’s passing on July 11, Graham successfully defeated Representative Ralph Norman and is set to contest the November election for a full six-year Senate term. Trump extended his endorsement to her campaign and provided substantial financial backing through his MAGA INC super PAC.

During a rally in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Trump emphasized his support for Graham, declaring, “I am on the ballot.” The 62-year-old Graham is poised to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in the upcoming general election, expected to secure a comfortable victory in the predominantly conservative state. This primary election serves as a litmus test for Trump’s influence on voters ahead of the midterm elections, as he strives to maintain Republican control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

Despite Trump’s endorsements, recent polls indicate public dissatisfaction with rising consumer prices and ongoing tensions with Iran, potentially affecting his influence. Notably, Trump’s MAGA INC. allocated $827,711 US in support of Graham, a rare demonstration of direct financial support from the president towards a favored candidate.

In a bid to recover from a perceived debate misstep regarding national security issues, Graham utilized Friday’s rally to address previous criticisms. She acknowledged her previous lack of expertise on such matters, contrasting with her late brother’s Senate career focus. Graham redirected the conversation towards domestic affairs, highlighting Trump’s immigration policies and anti-abortion advocacy. Prior to her Senate appointment, Graham’s advocacy work primarily centered on individuals with physical disabilities, lacking prior political experience.

South Carolina’s consistent support for Trump across his presidential campaigns suggests minimal impact on the broader congressional power struggle. Norman, a 73-year-old real estate developer with nearly a decade in the U.S. House, faced defeat in this election following an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.

Overall, Darline Graham’s victory underscores Trump’s ongoing influence within the Republican party, setting the stage for a closely watched Senate race in South Carolina.
