Prime Minister Mark Carney has characterized the ongoing talks with the U.S. to avert impending tariffs as crucial and demanding. Carney intends to engage in discussions with his American counterpart within the next 48 hours to secure a mutually beneficial agreement.
During a press briefing in St. John’s, Carney refrained from disclosing specifics regarding the negotiations to prevent President Donald Trump’s threatened Section 338 tariffs on Canadian goods worth billions of dollars. Carney emphasized the sensitivity and vigor of the negotiations and stressed the need to refrain from public negotiation at this critical juncture.
When asked about potential retaliatory measures if an agreement is not reached, Carney asserted his readiness for all possible scenarios. The Canadian-U.S. Trade Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, alongside Canada’s chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, engaged in extensive discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to navigate the looming tariffs and reduce existing levies on industrial products. Following their lengthy meeting, it was uncertain whether further discussions at the ministerial level would occur.
The negotiations revolve around the possibility of Canadian concessions in exchange for various demands from the U.S., including the reinstatement of U.S. liquor in Canadian stores and revisions to Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. autos. Conversely, Canada seeks the elimination of the impending Section 338 tariffs and substantial relief from the existing tariffs that have adversely affected key sectors. Despite signals from Greer indicating the U.S.’s reluctance to abolish its tariff framework entirely, Canadian negotiators remain hopeful for a favorable resolution.
Erin O’Toole, a member of the prime minister’s Canada-U.S. advisory committee, acknowledged progress in negotiations with the U.S. but highlighted the necessity of fair agreements that benefit Canadian workers and the economy. O’Toole underscored the potential repercussions of implementing 50% tariffs and emphasized Canada’s preparedness to respond accordingly should the need arise. He cautioned against the detrimental impacts of tariff escalations on both economies and advocated for a mutually beneficial resolution to avoid further trade conflicts.
