The court witnessed the appearance of the menacing individuals affiliated with Central America’s most perilous gang, projected from within the confines of a state-of-the-art prison facility. A groundbreaking mass trial unfolded as close to 500 purported associates of the infamous Mara Salvatrucha gang, commonly known as MS-13, participated remotely via video conferencing.
Authorities in El Salvador have leveled accusations against the group, attributing a staggering tally of 47,000 criminal acts to them, including a significant number of 29,000 homicides committed over the span of a decade. The defendants, connecting from the highly secured Counter-Terrorism Confinement Center, are facing charges of attempting to establish a “parallel state,” as disclosed by the Attorney General’s Office.
During the remote court proceedings, the alleged members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) made their appearances via video conferencing, showcasing a collective trial involving approximately 490 individuals, including the prominent figures within the gang. The accused individuals observed the hearings from the confines of the Counter-Terrorism Confinement Center mega-prison located in Tecoluca, El Salvador.
