“Long-Lost Relative Leaves £24,000 Inheritance”

Date:

Dean Povey was initially skeptical when he received an unexpected call informing him about a distant relative, Lilian May, from whom he was entitled to inheritance. Despite living just 90 minutes away from each other, Dean and Lilian had never met, showcasing how little one may know about their own family and the significance of having a valid will.

The inheritance, totaling £24,000 to be shared among 45 relatives, meant each individual would receive approximately £500. Reflecting on the revelation, Dean, a 52-year-old resident of Lancaster, expressed surprise at the familial connection, explaining that Lilian was his father’s cousin, whose mother was related to his grandfather. Despite their proximity, Dean had never come across Lilian’s existence, finding it rather poignant.

The contact regarding the inheritance came in 2024, shortly after Dean’s father’s passing, with his mother being the initial point of contact who then provided Dean’s details. The process was facilitated by Finders International, a prominent probate research firm in the UK and Ireland, engaged to locate heirs in cases where individuals pass away without a will.

Initially uncertain about the inheritance amount, Dean shared his astonishment at the family’s unfamiliarity, prompting him to delve deeper into his family history. The subsequent family tree provided by Finders uncovered further surprising connections, revealing that Dean’s great-grandparents had cared for Lilian at one point, a fact previously unbeknownst to him.

Receiving the inheritance proved to be a bright spot during a challenging period for Dean, who tragically lost his mother in January 2026 while grappling with a rare autoimmune disorder, Hughes-Stovin Syndrome. The condition, affecting only a small number of individuals in the UK, led to a severe health scare for Dean, underscoring the unexpected turns life can take.

Every year in the UK, numerous estates are left intestate, necessitating authorities and probate genealogists to locate rightful heirs. Simultaneously, a significant number of individuals pass away without close family ties, emphasizing the importance of proper estate planning.

Probate genealogist James Booth highlighted the intricate research involved in tracing Lilian’s heirs, given her complex background. Born out of wedlock, Lilian spent a considerable part of her life in care, eventually marrying while under care, with little information available about her husband. Extensive searches were conducted to identify the beneficiaries, eventually leading to Dean and the other 44 relatives entitled to the inheritance.
