China defiantly sailed a tanker through the waterway without intervention from the US Navy, in a bold display of power.
China expressed strong support for Iran in response to Trump’s controversial actions, with a sanctioned Chinese tanker boldly challenging American authority by navigating through the contested strait. Beijing condemned the blockade as “reckless” and emphasized its commitment to maintaining trade and energy agreements with Iran despite US pressure.
Amid the diplomatic standoff, China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun criticized the US blockade as “reckless” and reiterated China’s intention to uphold its economic ties with Iran. Beijing’s foreign ministry also condemned Trump’s actions as dangerous and irresponsible, warning of potential consequences on regional stability.
Maritime tracking data revealed the limitations of the US operation, as a Chinese tanker sanctioned by the US Treasury Department successfully passed through the strait. The vessel’s journey highlighted the ambiguity of Trump’s blockade, which only applies to ships traveling to or from Iranian ports, not those en route to other destinations.
In response to the situation, President Xi Jinping of China emphasized the importance of upholding international law and called for consistent application of legal norms to prevent regression into lawlessness. Xi proposed measures for restoring stability in the region, including peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a comprehensive approach integrating security and development.
