Four individuals have been killed, and several others have been wounded in a tragic school shooting incident that took place in Turkey.
The violent episode occurred at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Kahramanmaraş, as confirmed by the local governor of the region.
Governor Mükerrem Ünlüer of Kahramanmaraş stated, “There is a current attack underway. A devastating incident has transpired within one of our educational institutions. Reports indicate casualties and unfortunately, loss of life. An extensive investigation is being conducted.”
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the location following the incident, with Governor Ünlüer confirming the death toll of at least four individuals. Witnessed scenes outside the school showed students and faculty evacuating the premises.
Authorities have disclosed that the identity of the assailant remains unknown at this time.
Turkey’s Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced the immediate initiation of an inquiry following the attack, with public prosecutors actively investigating the site.
Gürlek emphasized, “It is imperative that media outlets respect the confidentiality of the ongoing investigation. Pertinent updates on the investigation’s progress will be shared by appropriate authorities.”
This event represents the second school shooting to occur in Turkey within a span of just two days.
Previously, on Tuesday, a 17-year-old gunman unleashed gunfire at a school in Siverek district, resulting in injuries to sixteen individuals. Governor Hasan Sildak confirmed that the perpetrator, a former student born in 2007, took his own life at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.
Sildak stated, “We have 16 wounded. The assailant, born in 2007, took his own life. The school was evacuated, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing.”
Law enforcement and medical teams swiftly responded to the Tuesday morning incident, which occurred at approximately 9:30 am local time. A witness recounted to Turkish television channel NTV that the assailant entered the school premises armed with a shotgun and began firing indiscriminately.
The Turkish Interior Ministry released a statement confirming the identification of the perpetrator behind Tuesday’s attack. The report indicated that a total of 10 students, four teachers, one police officer, and one canteen worker sustained injuries during the shooting incident.
