By 2026, artificial intelligence (AI) has permeated various sectors, prompting concerns among Canadians about hosting the large infrastructures that power AI in their neighborhoods.

Canada’s significant investment in AI has led to a surge in planned or proposed AI data centers, which demand substantial amounts of water and energy.

Advocates argue that these facilities could solidify Canada’s position as a leader in AI. However, the swift development pace has caused certain communities to halt progress. For instance, Oakville imposed a one-year moratorium on data center construction, while Mississauga is considering a similar measure following a proposal for a massive data center equivalent to three football fields.

Recently, hundreds attended town hall meetings in Alberta to seek clarity from the province’s technology minister regarding AI data center plans.

Many CBC readers have raised concerns about the sudden increase in data centers being constructed across Canada.

Here’s a breakdown of the situation.

Understanding Data Centers

Data centers are facilities that house and power computer servers, networking equipment, and other technology essential for computing and data storage. For AI data centers, the focus is on larger, more energy-intensive setups that utilize advanced computer chips, driving up energy consumption and necessitating enhanced cooling systems to manage the generated heat.
