The negotiations are escalating, with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc engaging in discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for the third time in less than a week. Their most recent virtual meeting, held on Sunday, lasted approximately an hour.
Ottawa’s recent focus has been on securing a “comprehensive agreement” with Washington. The Canadian government aims to persuade the Trump administration to revoke the new 50 per cent tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods set to come into effect this week, which represent about five per cent of Canada’s exports to the U.S.
Central to this agreement is a potential reduction in existing sectoral tariffs affecting industries such as steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber. Currently, steel and aluminum face 50 per cent tariffs, while auto tariffs stand at 25 per cent.
In Des Moines, Iowa, United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized the trade challenges with Canada, stating that the current situation is not a trade war but retaliation will not be tolerated.
Sources indicate that achieving a comprehensive deal addressing both the new tariffs and existing sectoral tariffs is critical to gaining provincial support. The resumption of American alcohol sales in Canada has been highlighted by the Trump administration as a crucial demand in the negotiations.
