“Indonesian Island of Flores Devastated by Deadly Earthquake”

Date:

In the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that claimed the lives of at least 68 individuals and left more than 200 injured on the Indonesian island of Flores, thousands of residents are still awaiting assistance. The disaster, which struck with a depth of 10 kilometers in East Nusa Tenggara province early Saturday, caused extensive damage, including collapsed buildings, blocked roads, and widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure.

Rasyid Jafar, a resident of the hardest-hit area in Manggarai regency, lamented the loss of his home, emphasizing the urgent need for essential supplies such as food, medicine, and clean water. The situation on Flores island remains dire, with many communities isolated and cut off from aid.

President Prabowo Subianto, during Indonesia’s Independence Day ceremony, called for prayers for the affected regions and observed a moment of silence to honor the nation’s heroes. The National Disaster Management Agency reported that over 4,500 homes were damaged, forcing around 19,000 individuals into temporary shelters, while also impacting numerous health facilities, schools, and places of worship.

The region has experienced numerous aftershocks, with authorities recording 1,576 tremors as of Monday, with a significant number felt by residents. In response, the governor declared a 14-day state of emergency on Sunday to facilitate relief efforts in the affected areas.

Urgent Need for Assistance

On Flores island, thousands of individuals have been forced to sleep outside damaged homes due to the risk of further aftershocks. The scale of devastation is visible, with fallen trees, impassable roads, and severely damaged structures, leaving residents in urgent need of essential supplies and medical aid.

Efforts are underway to provide assistance to the affected population, with nearly 1,500 military and police personnel deployed to distribute aid. Logistical challenges have hindered the delivery of supplies to some areas, prompting the setup of emergency field hospitals and health emergency operation centers in severely impacted areas.

Rescue teams are actively searching for survivors, although no reports of missing individuals have been received thus far. The situation remains critical as authorities work to reach remote communities, such as Palue Island, where residents are in urgent need of aid following days of isolation.
