“Canada Post Expands Weekend Deliveries Amid Financial Recovery”

Date:

Canada Post has initiated weekend parcel deliveries in Ottawa and Montreal, with plans to expand to Toronto by late November. The financially struggling Crown corporation will also introduce weekend delivery in urban centers like Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary next year. By the end of 2027, they aim to provide delivery on Saturdays and Sundays to seven million households.

During their annual public meeting, Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger stated, “We will demonstrate to Canadians that our service can evolve to meet their modern needs.” Private carriers have been ahead of Canada Post in offering weekend and evening delivery due to constraints in previous contracts with mail carriers. With new labor agreements in place, Canada Post is now able to catch up to market demands.

The corporation plans to assess public response to determine future expansions in other communities. In terms of financial stability, Canada Post reported a loss of $482 million before tax in the first half of 2026. Despite the ongoing financial challenges, they anticipate requiring additional federal loans to sustain operations.

Leadership acknowledged the necessity of reducing reliance on government funding in the long term. Canada Post has shown signs of recovery, with parcel revenue increasing by 20.7% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year, and operating costs decreasing by $119 million.

In June, Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) finalized a new collective agreement, marking the end of two years of labor disputes that included nationwide strikes. Additionally, the corporation is moving forward with community mailbox conversions, with plans to eliminate door-to-door letter delivery by 2031.

Residents can check their mailbox conversion schedule by postal code. An accommodation program is available for individuals facing accessibility challenges with the new mailboxes. Despite concerns raised by CUPW regarding service quality, impact on seniors and persons with disabilities, and potential job cuts, Canada Post is proceeding with the mailbox conversions.

The federal government is expected to continue funding Canada Post as it modernizes and adjusts its services. The corporation aims to sustain itself through the sale of products and services, as it has not received tax dollars and last reported a profit in 2017.
