“Ball Kid Collapse Halts Australian Open Match”

Date:

The first day of the Australian Open faced a temporary pause when a ball kid collapsed, prompting both players to assist while medical help was called for.

The incident took place during the match between Ekaterina Alexandrova, seeded 11th, and Zeynep Sonmez. At that moment, Alexandrova was making a comeback from being a set and a break down. Sonmez was on the verge of causing an upset, but Alexandrova managed to break serve twice, giving herself a chance to serve for the second set at 5-3.

The ball kid collapsed on the side of the 1573 Arena court, prompting both players and court attendants to rush over. The umpire halted play, calling for medical assistance and informing the audience about the suspension.

Commentator Catherine Whitaker reported, “The umpire is announcing an official pause in the match until help arrives. The priority is the ball kid’s well-being, but this break is challenging for Alexandrova, who was about to serve.”

Sonmez received praise for her compassionate response to the situation. Fans commended her sportsmanship, with one stating, “Class act from Sonmez,” while another added, “Big respect to her,” and a third noted, “Zeynep acted admirably, showing true sportsmanship.”

The timing was unfortunate for Alexandrova, as she was at a critical point in her serve when the interruption occurred. Medical staff arrived, assisted the ball kid to their feet, and escorted them off the court amid applause from the spectators.

The break seemed to affect Alexandrova’s momentum, leading to her losing the subsequent game when play resumed. Turkish fans in the 1573 Arena showed strong support for Sonmez, cheering and chanting as she played.

However, Alexandrova fought back, winning the set 6-4 to force a decisive third set. She started strongly in the final set, immediately breaking her opponent’s serve.

Nevertheless, Sonmez remained composed, securing a remarkable 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory in front of her supporters. Alexandrova will now focus on the women’s doubles, partnering with Venus Williams.

Melbourne experienced warm weather, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius. Canadian qualifier Liam Draxl faced challenges due to the conditions, requiring medical attention multiple times during his match against Damir Dzumhur in the men’s singles draw.
