Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has made a comeback on the latest episode of “The Simpsons,” titled “Treehouse of Horror Presents: The Revengening,” marking his first speaking appearance since 2017. Despite being seen in the background in recent years, Apu had stayed silent due to concerns about perpetuating racial stereotypes.
Sunil Malhotra, an Indian-American actor known for his work in “The Legend of Korra,” now voices Apu, taking over the role from Hank Azaria, a white actor who had voiced the character for 27 years. Azaria publicly apologized in 2021 for his involvement in creating and portraying Apu, expressing regret and a desire to personally apologize to every Indian individual in the country.
The character’s return was kept under wraps until the episode aired, with Apu reappearing as a mysterious figure who eventually declares his identity with the iconic line, “I am Apu.” This surprise unveiling has sparked a range of reactions online, with some fans welcoming Apu back while others expressing reservations about the change.
In an effort to address concerns over representation, “The Simpsons” has committed to having characters of color voiced by actors of the same ethnicity. This recasting initiative includes Sunil Malhotra as Apu, Alex Désert as Carl Carlson, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Dr. Julius Hibbert.
Moving forward, viewers can expect to see more of Apu and his family on the show. Showrunner Matt Selman emphasized the importance of evolving the character in a way that respects past criticisms and reflects a more inclusive approach to casting.
The return of Apu and the recasting of characters have prompted discussions about diversity and representation in animated programming. While some viewers appreciate the effort to address past controversies, others remain skeptical about the changes and the show’s relevance in today’s entertainment landscape.
