Five-time Tour de France winner and top contender Tadej Pogacar exited the Spanish Vuelta following a crash on the eighth stage of the competition. Despite holding a significant lead, the Slovenian cyclist was involved in an incident approximately 33 kilometers from the finish line. Despite attempting to resume cycling, Pogacar ultimately had to abandon the race and was assisted by medical personnel.
Pogacar, the leader of UAE Team Emirates, aimed to achieve the rare feat of winning all three Grand Tour races. Having secured victories at the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, he was determined to add the Vuelta to his accomplishments. Unfortunately, his aspirations were cut short by the unexpected crash during the race.
Footage from the event revealed Pogacar sustaining injuries to his head, left arm, and shoulder. Team manager Matxin Joxean Fernandez reported that Pogacar required stitches due to the injuries sustained. Despite initially expressing a desire to continue, Pogacar was in too much pain to proceed, leading to his withdrawal from the race.
After Pogacar’s exit, Enric Mas of Movistar assumed the race leader position, with Felix Gall and Primoz Roglic following closely behind. Mas, the first Spanish rider to lead the race in recent years, expressed mixed emotions about receiving the leader’s jersey following Pogacar’s unfortunate crash.
Jonas Vingegaard, Pogacar’s prominent rival, was absent from the Vuelta due to injuries sustained during the Tour de France earlier in the year. This marked Pogacar’s first-ever abandonment in his ten Grand Tour participations, having previously achieved top-three finishes consistently.
The Spanish Vuelta is scheduled to conclude in Granada on September 13, with the unexpected turn of events adding suspense and unpredictability to the remaining stages of the prestigious cycling competition.
