“Air New Zealand Introduces Economy Skynest for Long-Haul Flights”

Date:

Long-haul trips can be exciting adventures, but enduring long hours in a cramped plane seat and adjusting to a new time zone upon arrival can be challenging. While upgrading to business or first-class for lie-flat beds is a luxury option, it is often financially out of reach for most travelers due to the significantly higher cost compared to economy tickets.

Air New Zealand has introduced a more affordable alternative for passengers on ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland. Starting May 18, passengers can book a slot in the Economy Skynest™, described as the world’s first sleep pods in the sky. These six individual lie-flat nests can be reserved for four-hour periods during the flight, offering a comfortable resting space away from the standard economy seating.

Given the extended duration of flights on this route, lasting up to 18 hours, the Skynest provides passengers with a much-needed break. Each pod, located in a separate cabin area with a privacy curtain, is approximately six foot six inches tall, allowing even taller passengers to stretch out comfortably. Passengers booking a Skynest slot receive a complimentary amenity kit with essentials like an eye mask and earplugs. The bed linens are changed between passengers to maintain cleanliness, and each pod includes a seatbelt, USB charging outlet, and a small light for convenience.

The cost for a session in the Skynest starts at $495 New Zealand Dollars (approximately £215), offering a premium upgrade at a more affordable price point compared to premium cabin fares. Air New Zealand had previously introduced the Skycouch option in 2011, allowing economy passengers to transform a row into a lie-flat bed for added comfort on long-haul journeys. This feature, available on specific routes and aircraft, includes a pull-out footrest for a wider sleeping surface.

Other airlines, such as United Airlines with Relax Rows and Lufthansa offering Sleeper Rows, have also implemented similar sleeping solutions for long-haul flights. These innovations aim to enhance passenger comfort and provide more restful journeys on extended trips.
