In Las Vegas, a man from Ontario faced animal cruelty charges for taking a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a famous hotel in a drunken incident. Mitchell Fairbarn, the accused, was found guilty by a Las Vegas court on felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. He remains in custody awaiting sentencing, with a potential prison term of up to four years for the felony charge and six months for the misdemeanor.
Fairbarn, described as a contractor from rural Ontario, admitted to drinking “30 to 40” beers on the day of the incident during a construction expo in Las Vegas. The court heard that he entered the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino’s flamingo habitat around 5 a.m. and took the bird, believing it was a harmless prank.
Witnesses testified that Fairbarn spent time with the flamingo in an elevator and his hotel room, causing the bird physical harm. The flamingo, aged 27, suffered injuries and required medical treatment, including antibiotics and pain medication.
Fairbarn’s defense claimed that his actions were a result of intoxication, expressing remorse for his behavior. The court proceedings revealed conflicting perspectives on Fairbarn’s intent, with his lawyer emphasizing that no harm was intended.
Animal rights advocates and hotel officials expressed relief that Peachy has since recovered. The incident underscored the importance of animal welfare, with authorities and advocates emphasizing the seriousness of such acts.
