Kyiv Under Siege: Russian Airstrikes Kill 12

Date:

Russian airstrikes in Kyiv and the neighboring region resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and caused injuries to several others early on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. Since launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has intensified its aerial assaults on the country, particularly as its advances on the battlefield have significantly slowed.

The recent onslaught of drone attacks in Kyiv and nearby areas over the past five days has led to civilian casualties, structural damage, and disruptions to daily life. The utilization of advanced jet engine-powered drones has made interception more challenging, with continuous air-raid alerts disrupting the routines of millions of residents.

Additional explosions were reported in Kyiv on Tuesday morning, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighting how Russian drones and ballistic missiles targeted residential areas and railway infrastructure in the intensive overnight bombings. Sybiha urged Ukraine’s allies to step up economic pressure on Russia and consider utilizing the country’s frozen assets abroad to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Overnight attacks in Kyiv claimed the lives of eight individuals, predominantly railway workers, with further casualties reported from a daytime drone strike on a high-rise apartment building. In the vicinity of Kyiv, four individuals lost their lives and 13 others were injured in an attack on a residential building and other locations. Notably, one of the deceased individuals outside Kyiv was an Indian national.

The relentless Russian airstrikes also impacted a border crossing with Romania in the Black Sea region of Odesa, leaving numerous families without electricity, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Moscow’s intensified daytime attacks in addition to its regular nighttime bombardments have severely disrupted life in the Ukrainian capital.

In August alone, Russia deployed over 2,800 jet-powered drones, a significant increase from the previous month, with Ukraine’s air force managing to intercept five ballistic missiles in a single night. The country recently received a limited supply of Patriot interceptors to bolster its air defense capabilities.

Amid the escalating conflict, Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries and logistical infrastructure, including warehouses of e-commerce companies. Russian regional governors confirmed the occurrence of fires in the port area of Ust-Luga and damage to civilian facilities in the Samara region due to Ukrainian air attacks.

Estonia reported that drones involved in a Ukrainian strike against Russia briefly breached Estonian airspace, underscoring the importance of supporting Ukraine with air defense resources. Meanwhile, the U.S.-led peace talks have faced obstacles, with Ukraine rejecting Russian territorial demands and the United States preoccupied with other international conflicts.

Zelenskyy disclosed a productive conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as they work to finalize plans for a visit to Ukraine, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the face of the ongoing crisis.
