Masked Israeli settler militants launched a violent attack on homes near the occupied West Bank village of Qusra, marking the first significant assault following a recent siege by settlers that sparked international outrage. Witnesses reported an incident where settlers besieged a Palestinian home, pelting it with stones while trapping seven Palestinians inside. One of the trapped individuals, Saddam Oday, recounted that the Israeli military fired tear gas into the house, detained the residents, but released him without apprehending any settlers.
The homeowner, Luay Bayrudi, disclosed that upon the military’s arrival, soldiers handcuffed, blindfolded, and assaulted those inside before eventually releasing them. The Israeli military stated that their forces intervened to remove “rioters” and safeguard the house’s occupants. However, the military did not provide an immediate response regarding the tear gas usage, detention, and alleged mistreatment of residents.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence in Qusra, attributing it to a “handful of rioters” and denouncing criminal acts in both Qusra and a neighboring village. Residents reported frequent incursions by settlers despite the heavy military presence, with ongoing settler violence seen as part of a broader strategy to expand settlements into Palestinian territories.
Rights groups highlighted the escalating settler presence around Palestinian villages as a means to seize more land, undermining Palestinian statehood aspirations. Settler violence in the West Bank has surged, with some settlers emboldened by the Israeli government’s settlement expansions. The United Nations and most nations deem the settlements illegal under international law, but Israel disputes this classification, considering the area disputed rather than occupied.
Efforts to prevent further disturbances and restore order in the Qusra and Jalud areas will continue, as stated by the Israeli military. The surge in settler violence against Palestinians has raised concerns globally, underscoring the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the challenges of addressing territorial disputes in the region.
