“Tagged Monarch Butterfly MB26011 Navigates 2,300km to Mexico”

Date:

A monarch butterfly tagged as “MB26011” successfully reached Mexico after a remarkable five-week journey spanning over 2,300 kilometers. Laura Burns, the conservation program manager at Assiniboine Park Zoo, expressed awe at the remarkable migration, highlighting the butterfly’s ability to navigate obstacles and dangers.

Collaborating with Environment and Climate Change Canada researchers, Burns tagged 29 monarch butterflies in Winnipeg, marking the first tagging effort west of Ontario. The delicate butterflies were tagged with tiny radio trackers using a gentle process involving nets and eyelash glue.

Tracking the butterflies using the Project Monarch app revealed the progress of these majestic creatures as they made their way to Mexico. Unfortunately, some butterflies did not make it out of Manitoba, shedding light on the challenges monarchs face due to habitat destruction and other human activities.

Despite facing numerous threats, the monarch tagged as MB26011 still has a few hundred kilometers to travel before reaching the oyamel fir forests in central Mexico for the winter. Burns emphasized the importance of tracking data in identifying crucial stopover locations to enhance conservation efforts for these endangered butterflies.

Another tagged butterfly named Eddie was located southwest of Kansas City, with a significant distance still to cover. The ongoing migration of these butterflies underscores the resilience and determination of these creatures as they navigate their perilous journey.

The data collected from the trackers will provide valuable insights for conservationists, enabling them to protect key habitats and collaborate with experts across different regions to safeguard the monarch butterfly population for generations to come.
