“New Documentary ‘Run Terry Run’ Honors Terry Fox”

Date:

Terry Fox, a prominent Canadian figure known for his 1980 cross-country run to raise cancer research awareness and funds, is the subject of a new documentary titled “Run Terry Run.” Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film directed by Sean Menard delves into Fox’s persona through previously unreleased footage, showcasing his voice, humor, struggles, and unwavering determination.

The documentary sheds light on various aspects of Terry Fox’s journey. Despite not completing his intended route from St. John’s to Victoria spanning 8,000 kilometers, Fox ran over 5,000 kilometers in 143 days before halting near Thunder Bay due to cancer spreading to his lungs. Along the way, Fox’s stops in Ontario to engage with supporters helped transform the Marathon of Hope into a nationwide movement.

The film also explores Fox’s relationships, including his camaraderie with best friend Doug Alward and the addition of his younger brother, Darrell Fox, to the expedition. It reveals Fox’s frustration with media portrayal, his adamant stance against personal sponsorship money, and his inspiration drawn from battling cancer as a young patient.

Moreover, the documentary captures Fox’s lighter moments, showcasing his playful side and interactions with others during the grueling journey. Despite facing challenges in Quebec and Ontario, Fox’s legacy lives on through the annual Terry Fox runs that have raised over $1 billion for cancer research globally.

“Run Terry Run” offers a poignant tribute to Terry Fox’s enduring legacy and opens in theaters on October 9.
