“Unveiling the Intriguing World of the Ocean Sunfish”

Date:

The ocean sunfish, often underestimated in appearance, can reach a weight of up to two tonnes and is frequently covered in parasites, including its eyeballs. In a recent episode of The Nature of Things 101, host Sarika Cullis-Suzuki delves into the intriguing world of this peculiar fish.

Cullis-Suzuki highlights the unique features of the Mola mola, a type of ocean sunfish renowned for its massive circular body, lack of a tail, and enormous fins. Despite its size, these fish are agile travelers, venturing deep into the ocean multiple times a day in search of food. However, their slow movement and large surface area make them a prime target for parasites that thrive in various water zones.

A staggering 73 different parasite species have been identified on the Mola mola and other ocean sunfish varieties, some even hosting parasites of their own. To combat these unwanted guests, sunfish resort to breaching, propelling themselves out of the water and crashing back down, possibly to dislodge parasites. Additionally, they allow smaller fish and birds to feed on the parasites infesting their bodies.

Despite our existing knowledge, the ocean sunfish remains a subject requiring further research. Cullis-Suzuki emphasizes the need for continued study to unravel more mysteries surrounding this fascinating species.
