Dennis Haskins, famously known for his portrayal of principal Richard Belding on the popular TV show “Saved by the Bell,” has passed away at the age of 75. Jay Schachter, his representative, confirmed the sad news in a statement to CBC News. Schachter expressed deep sorrow at the loss, highlighting Haskins’ endearing character and his unwavering dedication to his fans.
The actor, hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, gained widespread recognition for his role as the caring and just principal at Bayside High, known for his iconic catchphrase, “Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?” Haskins initially brought Mr. Belding to life on Disney Channel’s “Good Morning, Miss Bliss,” which later evolved into the beloved series “Saved by the Bell,” airing from 1989 to 1993.
Haskins continued his portrayal of Mr. Belding in subsequent spin-offs like “Saved by the Bell: The New Class” and reunited with former cast members Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez, and Tiffani Thiessen in a sketch on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in 2015.
Following his passing, Haskins’ co-stars have taken to social media to express their grief and share heartfelt tributes. Tiffani Thiessen reminisced about Haskins’ impact on her teenage years, praising his guidance and kindness, while Mario Lopez fondly remembered their shared laughter and friendship over the years, calling Haskins an integral part of their “Bayside family.”
Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle alongside Haskins, described their nearly four-decade friendship as a profound blessing and highlighted his enduring kindness and loyalty. She expressed deep sadness at his loss.
Haskins’ acting career spanned several decades, with appearances in popular shows such as “Mad Men,” “Hot in Cleveland,” and “New Girl,” as well as a role in Seth MacFarlane’s film “A Million Ways to Die in the West.”
