Kevin Murison, a bagpiper in Ottawa, receives varied reactions when he performs on a busy sidewalk during weekends. While some passersby cover their ears, most offer positive feedback, praising his playing. Murison, 35, often busks in full Highland attire on a bridge near the Ottawa Locks, next to the Château Laurier.
In a heartwarming incident last year, a tourist from Brazil was moved to tears by Murison’s music and even gave him her phone number, expressing a desire to hear him play in South America. However, not all encounters have been pleasant. Murison recalls an incident where a man demanded he stop playing, leading to a confrontation where the man threw a drink at him and stole money from his open case.
Recently, a disturbing incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon while Murison was performing in his usual spot. A man approached him under the guise of wanting a photo but then revealed a knife, leading to an unprovoked attack that left Murison with injuries requiring four stitches and a significant gash on his bagpipe bag.
Despite the traumatic experience, Murison remains resilient and determined to continue playing his beloved instrument. The attacker, a 25-year-old man, was swiftly apprehended by police after a passerby called 911. The suspect faces multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and probation breaches.
Expressing gratitude for the support he has received, Murison’s band has already provided him with a new bag, demonstrating the solidarity within the bagpiping community. Although his recovery will take time, Murison remains optimistic about returning to his passion once he has healed.
The unwavering dedication and courage of Kevin Murison in the face of adversity serve as a testament to his love for the bagpipes and his commitment to sharing his music with the community.
