“Record Owl Migration Surges in British Columbia”

Date:

A significant number of migrating owls at the Mugaha Marsh Banding Station in northern British Columbia have researchers working diligently due to an unusual surge not witnessed in years.

Jeannine Randall, a bird biologist with the Mackenzie Nature Observatory, expressed excitement about this exceptional year, noting that they usually catch around 100 owls but have already captured 266 with two weeks remaining in the season, making it a record-breaking year.

The surge in owl numbers has caused a shortage of the required tracking bands, specifically the larger size bands needed for the saw-whet owls, the primary species targeted for monitoring.

While seeking assistance from other organizations, it became evident that the owl boom was widespread, leading to shortages at various stations. Randall attributes the spike in owl numbers to the abundance of small rodents this year, which serve as the main prey for these birds.

Although the high numbers at Mackenzie are positive, Rémi Torrenta, a biologist with Birds Canada, highlights a concerning trend of decreasing owl populations over the past 25 years, including the northern saw-whet owls.

Torrenta explains that the current owl abundance is likely part of a well-documented four-year cycle, where a surplus of owls leads to a subsequent crash in the rodent population, forcing owls to migrate south in search of food, known as a mass eruption phenomenon.

To monitor these trends, Birds Canada coordinates the Nocturnal Owl Survey, a citizen science program that relies on volunteers nationwide to track owl populations each spring.

The banding project at the Mackenzie Nature Observatory is an essential component of broader scientific research, providing vital data on owl populations and migration patterns. Recently, the station recaptured an owl originally banded in Victoria in 2024, shedding light on the species’ travel behaviors.

Understanding these patterns is crucial for conservation efforts and species management decisions.
