Two days post the conclusion of the Edmonton Marathon, the race director issues an apology following the realization of an error in accounting for detours that resulted in the race courses being longer than intended. The admission validates suspicions held by many runners.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Edmonton Marathon race director Tom Keogh disclosed that both the half-marathon and marathon courses were 674.7 meters longer than initially believed. Keogh expressed regret for the miscalculation, attributing it to errors in factoring in detour-related course adjustments.
Acknowledging the mistake, Keogh asserted ownership of the error, stating, “We take full responsibility.” Elite and amateur runners had voiced concerns about the race distances prior to the official statement. The issue came to light when four runners highlighted that they had run a longer distance than expected.
Despite assurances that the courses were accurately measured and confirmed on race day, an inadvertent error occurred. Keogh emphasized that efforts were underway to rectify the situation, especially considering the Edmonton Marathon’s significance as a qualifier for prestigious events like the Boston Marathon.
One such runner, Mitch Walz from Calgary, trained for a year aiming to meet the Boston Marathon qualifying standard. However, due to the extended course, his finish time exceeded the required threshold. The unexpected turn of events left him disheartened, despite his strong performance.
Keogh reassured participants that steps would be taken to prevent such errors in the future, highlighting the importance of maintaining certification processes. The Boston Athletic Association clarified that adjusted results would not be accepted if the distance deviated from the standard, but participants exceeding the required length with qualifying times would still be considered for entry.
Looking ahead, efforts are being made to address the discrepancies and ensure a fair outcome for affected runners.
