California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure within the Republican Party will compel U.S. President Donald Trump to resume negotiations with Canada. In an interview with CBC News chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton, Newsom highlighted the mounting criticism within Trump’s party.
The remarks come ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, a crucial test for Trump’s presidency as Republicans currently control both the Senate and House of Representatives. Trade discussions between the U.S. and Canada stalled recently, leading to Prime Minister Mark Carney suspending talks. Shortly after, Trump imposed new tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Newsom expressed confidence that Trump cannot afford to prolong the hiatus. He suggested that Trump would return to the negotiating table within a few days to a maximum of three weeks. Emphasizing California’s stance, Newsom denounced Trump’s treatment of Canada.
The governor criticized Trump, labeling him as an “invasive species” in the White House and expressing embarrassment as an American. California has felt the impact of the trade conflict, particularly affecting the state’s wine industry, with California wines absent from many provinces’ shelves for over a year.
Despite Canada being the largest foreign market for California wine, U.S. wine exports to Canada declined by $343 million between 2024 and 2025. Newsom acknowledged animosity among California wine producers towards Canada and attributed the situation to Trump’s policies.
Newsom praised Carney’s firm approach towards Trump, stating that Trump respects strength but not weakness. The governor, known for his criticism of Trump, is not seeking re-election and is speculated to be a Democratic contender for the 2028 presidential race. When asked if his opposition to Trump’s tariffs is part of a political strategy, Newsom denied such claims but did not dismiss the possibility of running for higher office in the future.
