Actor Hannah Einbinder recently took to social media to redirect attention to the crisis in Gaza rather than focusing on her arrest during a protest outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s UN address. Einbinder emphasized the ongoing conflict in Palestine and Southern Lebanon, criticizing the U.S. for its support of Israel.
The protest saw over 100 demonstrators, including actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, being apprehended in New York City while Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly. Images circulated of Sarandon, 79, and Einbinder, 31, being led away by authorities, with Sarandon sporting a shirt proclaiming “fund people not bombs.” Comedian Caleb Hearon, Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, and New York City council member Chi Osse were also among those detained.
The protest, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, aimed to draw attention to the plight of Palestinians, with chants demanding an end to U.S. military support for Israel. The group reported over 100 arrests, highlighting the call for an end to the conflict and U.S. funding to Israel.
The event attracted Canadian actor Elliot Page, who shared the group’s statement on his social media platform. Various reports, including those from Amnesty International and a UN inquiry, have labeled Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocidal. However, Netanyahu rebutted these claims during his speech, asserting Israel’s efforts to prevent civilian casualties and provide aid to Gaza.
Critics have accused Israel of obstructing aid efforts in Gaza, leading to humanitarian concerns. Meanwhile, delegates at the UN session walked out as Netanyahu began his address, underscoring the divisive opinions surrounding Israel’s actions. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also made a statement, highlighting the challenges faced by the Palestinian people amid the ongoing conflict.
As international pressure mounts on Israel, the U.S. continues to support the country, planning a substantial arms deal worth $2.8 billion. Israeli officials have faced criticism for proposals that could lead to the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza, a move condemned by many as potentially constituting ethnic cleansing.
