Residents of Fort McKay, situated in the heart of the oilsands in Alberta, are facing significant challenges due to high levels of dust pollution. A recent study published in Atmospheric Pollution Research reveals that the community is experiencing excessive dustfall, surpassing regulatory air quality standards.
Led by University of Toronto PhD candidate Kristin Iorio, the research highlights that Fort McKay is particularly susceptible to dust pollution events driven by coarse particles that conventional monitoring methods often fail to detect. The study found that the community’s monthly dustfall levels consistently exceeded guidelines, emphasizing the need for improved monitoring practices.
Data collected between 2022 and 2025 by various environmental organizations demonstrated that Fort McKay experiences a higher volume of dustfall compared to neighboring areas. The lack of regulation for larger particulate matter, such as PM10, poses a significant challenge as these particles can have adverse health effects.
To address these gaps, the study recommends implementing real-time monitoring and updating air quality guidelines to better capture the impact of dust pollution.
