A powerful tornado has struck the village of Pomas in southern France, causing extensive damage to over 300 homes and injuring numerous individuals. Thankfully, no missing persons have been reported in the aftermath of the disaster.
According to the Aude prefecture, as of Tuesday morning, approximately 1,400 households remained without electricity. The tornado was captured swirling above the village of Verzeille, just a few kilometers east of Pomas, in a social media video verified by Reuters. Many residences in its path suffered broken windows.
In Preixan, located a few kilometers north of Pomas, the tornado was also seen causing destruction, as depicted in another social media video verified by Reuters.
In the wake of the tornado, residents are now assessing the damage and beginning the cleanup process. Images show a man amidst the wreckage of a damaged house in Pomas, debris inside the Saint Julien et Sainte Basilisse church following its roof collapse, fallen trees in a cemetery, and individuals covering a damaged building’s roof with tarp. Additionally, pedestrians can be seen walking past a fallen tree near damaged homes in Pomas.
The community is coming together to address the aftermath of the tornado, with efforts underway to repair and rebuild the affected areas.
